🎯 What You'll Learn

  • ✓Identify the skills and experiences that create long-term career “capital”
  • ✓Map possible advancement paths, including promotions, lateral moves, or role changes
  • ✓Create a 12-month career development plan that supports your financial goals

Introduction

Your career is one of the most powerful tools you have for building long-term financial stability. But advancement isn’t only about working harder—it’s about working strategically and being seen.

This lesson helps you:

• Clarify which skills and experiences increase your options. • Think about promotions, lateral moves, or industry shifts. • Build a realistic 12-month plan, even if you have limited time.

We also acknowledge that bias, caregiving responsibilities, and other structural barriers can shape opportunities. The goal is to support you in navigating the system as it is, while still advocating for change where you can.

1. Building Career Capital

“Career capital” is the mix of:

• Skills and expertise (what you can do). • Relationships and networks (who knows and trusts you). • Reputation (what people expect from you).

To grow your career capital, ask:

• Which skills are most valued in the roles I want next? • Where am I already strong, and where are my gaps? • Who are 3–5 people whose work I admire, and what paths did they take?

Building capital doesn’t always mean more hours. It can mean:

• Taking on a visible project aligned with your strengths. • Asking for training or mentoring. • Sharing your work more visibly (presentations, documentation, cross-team collaborations).

This is especially important if you’re in a group that’s often overlooked for advancement; visibility and sponsorship can help counteract that.

2. Strategic Moves and Timing

Career growth is rarely a straight line. Helpful moves can include:

• **Promotions** within your current organization. • **Lateral moves** that build new skills or move you into a growing area. • **Role or industry shifts** that better match your values, pay goals, or life needs.

Reflect on:

• What would a “next good role” look like for you (title, pay range, responsibilities)? • How ready do you feel today—skills, confidence, portfolio of work? • What might be a realistic timeline (for example, 12–24 months)?

Sometimes the most powerful move is to:

• Clarify your value and ask directly about a path to promotion, or • Begin a focused job search in environments that better align with your needs and potential.

3. A 12-Month Career and Income Plan

Turn ideas into a simple, flexible plan:

• Step 1: Define your primary focus for the next 12 months – For example: promotion, job change, skill-building, or stabilizing in a new role.

• Step 2: Choose 3–5 concrete actions – Complete a specific training or certification. – Lead or contribute to a visible project. – Update your résumé and professional profiles. – Have three networking or informational conversations.

• Step 3: Link actions to financial goals – Estimate the pay range for your “next good role.” – Consider how benefits and stability factor in. – Note any necessary tradeoffs (for example, accepting slightly lower pay for a role with better growth potential).

Your plan is a living document. Life happens—especially if you are balancing caregiving, health, or community responsibilities. The key is to keep making **small, intentional moves** rather than waiting for the perfect moment.
